Overview

Mr D is the food and grocery delivery app in the Takealot Group. Drivers deliver by bike or car.

Mr D asks for a South African driving licence, and a South African ID or work permit. It does not name a learner's licence, an international permit, an asylum document or a refugee document.

You also need your own transport, preferably a bike or small vehicle, a roadworthy certificate and proof of residence each no older than one year, a valid vehicle licence renewal document, third-party insurance, and an Android phone.

Mr D is the only company here that lists the areas it serves on its own driver page. Eleven are named, and they are in the table below.

Mr D lists no minimum age and no earnings rate.

Application process

Apply on Mr D's own driver page. Takealot Group's Mr D page has a Sign Up Now button that leads to the same Takealot Group onboarding form.

Get these ready first:

  • A South African ID, or a work permit if you are a foreign national.
  • A valid South African driving licence.
  • A clear criminal background check.
  • Your own transport, preferably a bike or small vehicle.
  • A roadworthy certificate and proof of residence, each no older than one year.
  • A valid vehicle licence renewal document and third-party insurance.
  • Your own Android phone.

One thing to watch on the phone. Mr D's page says Android version 6 or later. The Takealot Group form that both Mr D and Takealot use asks for version 7 or later. The two do not match, so aim for 7 or later if you can.

Mr D does not say how long activation takes.

Foreign documents

We do not give immigration or legal advice. This page describes what each company lists at onboarding. A company accepting your document is not the same as being allowed to work in South Africa, and neither one proves the other. Check with the company, and with the Department of Home Affairs about your own status.

Can foreign nationals apply?

Mr D's driver page names a work permit for foreign nationals. It does not mention a passport, an asylum document or a refugee document.

Mr D says less than Uber Eats and Takealot do. If you hold an asylum seeker permit, those two name it in writing, so you have something to show.

Questions people ask

Will Mr D accept an international driving licence?
Mr D's driver page asks for a valid South African driving licence and does not mention an international permit. It has not said one is refused either. Uber Eats does name an International Driving Permit in writing, if that is what you hold.
Which areas does Mr D deliver in?
Mr D's own driver page lists eleven: Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, East London, Pietermaritzburg, Polokwane, Kimberley and Mbombela, which it writes as Nelspruit. Being on the list means Mr D delivers there. It does not promise that new drivers are being taken on there right now.
Do I need a PrDP for Mr D?
No professional driving permit is mentioned on either of Mr D's driver pages. Mr D has not said one is unnecessary either.
