Overview

Pingo is the Shoprite group's last-mile delivery business. It does all Checkers Sixty60 deliveries, and it recruits and contracts the drivers.

Sixty60 is not the only work. Pingo says it also delivers for selected Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Checkers LiquorShop, Shoprite, Shoprite LiquorShop, Petshop Science, Outdoor, Medirite Plus and Checkers LittleMe stores.

Pingo says it is always looking for driver partners across the whole of South Africa. That means applications are open nationally. It does not mean there is work in your area, or that activation is quick. Pingo names no cities.

Notes on the requirements

Pingo supplies a branded load box and a branded uniform. Both carry the client's branding, not Pingo's.

Pingo says it provides drivers with insurance covering accidents, theft, personal injury, third-party liability and death, and that the detail comes during onboarding. It calls the cover “cost-effective and comprehensive”, and cost-effective suggests there is a cost. Ask for the policy limits, the exclusions, and whether a premium comes off your pay, before you accept work.

Foreign documents

We do not give immigration or legal advice. This page describes what each company lists at onboarding. A company accepting your document is not the same as being allowed to work in South Africa, and neither one proves the other. Check with the company, and with the Department of Home Affairs about your own status.

Compare every company on foreign documents

Can foreign nationals apply?

Pingo lists a South African work permit, or what it calls an asylum visa, among its accepted documents. It does not name a foreign passport or a refugee status document.

That is Pingo's onboarding list. Your right to work depends on your own status, document and endorsements. DriverZA cannot decide that for you.

What if I do not have a vehicle?

Pingo rents motorbikes to qualifying drivers. It does not list a price or the full rules.

Read the wording carefully. Pingo says the driver must service the bike at regular intervals, and that Pingo will contribute an agreed amount per month while the bike is under the rental agreement. A contribution towards a cost is not the same as being paid.

Pingo's home page calls these rent-to-own options. Its driver page calls them rented options. Rent-to-own means you end up owning the bike; renting means you do not. Pingo does not explain which applies, so ask.

Pingo does say drivers get access to a regional network of service centres for servicing and parts. Get the monthly amount, what the contribution covers, insurance, damage and theft liability, and the cancellation terms in writing before you sign.

Pingo also says drivers who do not own a phone can buy one from Pingo. Ask what that costs and how it is repaid.

Driver earnings

Pingo lists no rand amount. It says drivers earn a “highly competitive” rate per delivery, earn extra for additional drive-outs or longer distances, and may get tips. It says delivery payments and tips are processed weekly.

“Highly competitive” is advertising, not a figure. We could not verify the rate per delivery, how much work is available in any area, the hours, or what you keep after fuel, data, servicing and any rental.

Before you sign, ask for the rate per delivery, roughly how many deliveries a shift, and what is deducted. Then work out the fuel yourself.

Questions people ask

Is Pingo the same as Checkers Sixty60?
Pingo is the Shoprite group company that runs Sixty60's deliveries. Sixty60 is the shopping app. Driver applications go to Pingo.
How often does Pingo pay drivers?
Pingo says delivery payments and tips are processed weekly. It does not give a rand rate per delivery.
Is the Pingo bike a rental or rent-to-own?
Pingo's two pages disagree. Its driver page says “rented motorbike options”. Its home page says “rent-to-own motorbike options”. Rent-to-own means you end up owning the bike, renting means you do not, so ask Pingo which one you are being offered and get it in writing.
Does Pingo pay me a monthly amount for the bike?
No. Pingo says it will contribute an agreed amount per month while the bike is under the rental agreement. That is a contribution towards the cost of the bike, not income.
Does Pingo accept an asylum document?
Pingo's official page lists what it calls an asylum visa. That is a document Pingo accepts at onboarding. It is not a decision about your right to work.
