How to Become a Checkers Sixty60 Driver in South Africa

Overview

Sixty60 is Checkers' shopping app. Pingo, a Shoprite group company, does the deliveries. Sixty60's own site says so: “All Sixty60 orders are delivered to our customers by Pingo.”

So you apply to Pingo, not to Checkers. Sixty60's site carries an Apply to drive for Sixty60 link, and it opens Pingo's application form, which is headed the same way.

Pingo asks for a valid driving licence, an accepted identity or permit document, an Android phone with data, a roadworthy vehicle or motorcycle, Grade 12 or an equivalent NQF level 4 qualification, and clear spoken English with customers. You must be 18 or older.

Pingo says it is looking for driver partners across the whole of South Africa. That means applications are open nationally. It does not promise that there is a place in your area.

Apply through Pingo's official application form. You can reach it from Sixty60's own site, from Pingo's site, or from the link on this page. All three go to the same place.

If someone tells you they recruit Sixty60 drivers on WhatsApp, check them against that form first. Checkers does not recruit drivers directly, and Pingo's form is free.

Pingo says successful applicants complete a full induction on the delivery app and on how to represent Pingo and its client brands. Pingo also says its drivers are trained in defensive driving, customer service and standard delivery procedures.

What if I do not have a vehicle?

Pingo rents motorbikes to qualifying drivers. It does not list the price or the full rules.

Two things to read carefully. You must service the bike at regular intervals, and Pingo says it will contribute an agreed amount per month while the bike is under the rental agreement. That is a contribution towards the cost, not money paid to you.

Pingo's home page also calls this a rent-to-own option, while its driver page calls it a rented option. Those are not the same deal, and Pingo does not explain the difference.

So ask for all of this in writing before you sign: the monthly charge, what Pingo's contribution actually pays for, whether you end up owning the bike, servicing terms, insurance, who pays for damage or theft, and what it costs to end the agreement.
