Overview

A vehicle in one of four classes, a DEKRA assessment you pay for, a signed carrier agreement, a phone that can scan, and training Picup runs only where it needs more drivers.

Detail

Documents you upload in the app

  • An ID document. If you are not a South African citizen, an asylum seeker document, work permit or visa.
  • A driving licence. Picup names no code.
  • Proof of address.
  • Proof of banking details.
  • A vehicle licence.
  • Third party insurance.
  • A photograph of yourself, and one of your vehicle.
  • The carrier agreement, initialled on every page and signed.
  • The vehicle assessment report.

Vehicle assessment

Any DEKRA station, or Tyger Wheel and Tyre, quoting reference 791548. Bring the vehicle, an ID document or driving licence, and the vehicle licence disc.

You pay: R170.00 for a motorcycle, R240.55 for a light passenger vehicle or small van, R300.00 for a large van. Card, not cash. Open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:00 and Saturday 08:00 to 12:00. Go before 10:00.

DEKRA checks the vehicle, and your appearance and Picup gear.

Phone

A phone or tablet with a working camera, working GPS, airtime, data and more than 25% battery. Android only. Picup expects you to call customers rather than message them, so the airtime matters too.

Training

Driver training and an online test, both before activation. On-site training runs in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town, booked on the app's live chat. Picup trains only where it needs more drivers.

Gear

A Picup shirt, clean pants, skirt or Picup shorts, and closed shoes. A jacket, reflective vest and cap are listed as extras. Before each shift Picup asks you to confirm you have fuel, gear, airtime, data and a charged battery.

What Picup does not ask for

No professional driving permit, no police clearance, no roadworthy certificate and no minimum age. Picup has not said any of those are unnecessary, so the table below reads not confirmed rather than no.
